Have you ever asked your parents what your nearly-name was? My sister Alicia was very nearly a Stephanie. If I’d been blue not pink, I would’ve been a David. Quick canvas of the room throws up a Rustam, Asher and a Gregory. We nearly had an Esme and a Hugo had the kids been the other way around.

Names are big news at the moment, with Gurgle magazine picking up on recent stats that 10% of parents regret the name choices they made for their children – because they were less unique than they’d hoped, or they were swayed by trends that have way passed.

Nameberry.com is the current hipster baby naming website with great features (currently wondering where names beginning with ‘W’ went – West? Waldo? Wren?) plus some very very cool suggestions from lists like…

Irish Surname Names (Cullen/Mara)
General Surname Names (Jefferson/Winslet)
Clunky But Cool Names (Otto/Imogen)
If You Like X, You Might Love… (Lily…. Delilah/Willa/Violet)
Names No Girl May be Cool Enough For (Hester)
Neo-Macho Boys Names (Hunter – this was on my list!!)
Hipster Names– (Clementin/Sebastian)

It also has a search feature that’ll give you great info on what your chosen name means, plus popularity rankings. Love it! Maybe even worth having another one for ;) What was your nearly-name? Have you picked out names for your maybe mini-mes yet?

X

  1. Alice says:

I was nearly a Rosie (or Christopher, if I was a boy!).

I find baby names fascinating, such a responsible decision to be lumbered with.

Lol! I read an extract of this on someone’s facebook (didn’t know you’d bought out a new one!) and was like – so weird!!! Another alicia, almost stephanie!… then i twigged! :) mum really likes Xanthy (not sure if that’s the spelling…the X becomes Z when you say it…) and I like Kezia still…
